Insurance vs. Private Pay

Private Pay

  • Avoid diagnoses on your record
  • No limit on number of sessions per week
  • Less documentation = more quality session time
  • Flexibility in choosing a quality Therapist
  • Increased time in session, if desired
  • Flexible scheduling and availability
  • More positive outcomes

Insurance

  • Must prove “medical necessity” by giving diagnosis
  • Limitation on finding quality Therapist
  • Diagnoses become part of medical record
  • May have to meet deductible first
  • Documentation needs to be completed
  • Records of private information can be requested
  • Records may limit ability to qualify for life insurance
  • Many issues not covered by insurance (stress, relationships, etc.)
  • Some plans do not cover relationship or couples counseling
